Working with Garment Factories in China
Fabric selection, samples and direct communication with garment manufacturers

Working with garment factories in China is not only about finding a factory and asking for a price.
For clothing projects, the material itself is part of the specification. Fabric, colour, texture, weight and finish can all affect the final product.
The video shows part of our work with garment factories in China, where fabric samples and material options are reviewed directly on the ground.
Fabric selection starts with the right sample
When working with a garment manufacturer, the first quotation is only one part of the discussion.
The material needs to be understood before production moves forward.
Depending on the project, this can include:
- reviewing available fabric samples
- comparing colours and material options
- discussing the required fabric with the garment factory
- checking whether the selected material is suitable for the intended product
- confirming specifications before production
Physical samples are important because materials can look very different in photographs or catalogue images compared with the actual fabric.
Direct communication with the factory
Working directly with garment manufacturers also makes communication more practical.
Instead of relying only on messages and product catalogues, requirements can be discussed with the supplier while looking at the actual materials and samples.
This is particularly useful when a project has specific requirements for colour, fabric type, appearance or finish.
The objective is simple: make sure the supplier understands what is required before production starts.
From material selection to production
For an apparel sourcing project, the process does not stop when a suitable fabric is found.
The selected material becomes part of the product specification that needs to be communicated to the garment factory.
From there, GulfCN can coordinate the sourcing process with the relevant supplier, including supplier communication, specification review, production coordination and pre-shipment quality control where required.
Why this matters for UAE buyers
A UAE buyer may be thousands of kilometres away from the factory.
The difference between receiving a catalogue and having someone on the ground is the ability to see the materials, communicate with the manufacturer and collect physical information before making production decisions.
That is particularly relevant for apparel, where the material is an important part of the final product.
